METROPOLIS, Ill. -- Down 44-28, Massac County outscored Mayfield, 22-6, over the final 4:44 of regulation and sent the nightcap into overtime. But there, the Lady Patriots were held scoreless while the Lady Cardinals emerged with a 14-point win, 64-50.

Massac pulled even with 28 seconds left off a foul and technical assessed on the Mayfield bench after a substitution attempt. Farrah Castleman's technical shots and Kendra Walden's free throws sent the game into four additional minutes.

But there, the Lady Cardinals (2-0) were 11-of-20 at the line and got an additional 3-pointer from Madi Felts while also hampering any additional comeback by the Lady Pats (2-5).

"That's what we've been looking for for a long time," Lady Cardinals head coach Bradley Nanney said. "That resilience. We saw that tonight with how we handled the final 30 seconds of regulation and overtime."

Felts had 22 points to lead all scorers. She was 8-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 on 3-pointers. Lyndsey Looper and Laken Emerson also had 10 each on an 18-of-37 night of shooting.

Massac County was led by Castleman's 13 with Walden adding 11.

Thursday will be the tournament's conclusion with Mayfield facing Paducah Tilghman at 6;15 p.m., followed by Massac County and Carbondale.

With the first game of the season, things can be a bit difficult. Mayfield made things harder than it needed, but still emerged with a 44-37 win over Carbondale, Illinois, in the tip-off game at the City of Metropolis Girls Tournament Monday.

Trailing 29-14 in the third quarter, Carbondale went on a 16-2 run to get within 31-30 heading into the final eight minutes at Massac County High School.

The Lady Cardinals then pestered the Terriers by getting to the line for a 7-of-12 showing in the fourth period that helped give them the cushion they thought they'd established a quarter earlier.

"We thought we could pull away, but we had a couple of mental mistakes," Mayfield head coach Bradley Nanney said of the third-frame lapse. "We did not get some rebounds we had to get, and we didn't make a lot of free throws. So we made it a whole lot closer than it should have been."

Mayfield had a strong start, getting 3-pointers from Madi Felts and Kyler Henson for a 19-6 lead in the first quarter, then doubled up Carbondale's score at halftime despite going four minutes without a basket.

Hannah Lowndes scored 10 of her 14 in the third that rallied Carbondale (0-4), but Lyndsey Looper's four trips to the free throw line after drawing fouls inside disrupted the Terriers' momentum.

Looper led all scorers with her 15 points, thanks to 9-of-12 on free throws.
