The local community gathered at Harmon Park Thursday for a ceremony recognizing Veterans Day. The event featured war-era Jeeps and speakers from the Graves County VFW Post 12197, DAV Local Chapter 106 and American Legion Post 26. Post 26 Historian John Hendley spoke on the 100-year history of the Disabled American Veterans organization, which coincides with Mayfield’s local chapter’s 70th anniversary. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Kent Curtsinger spke on service and sacrifice of veterans in and after military service, and Rodger Watson spoke on the help provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars local post. Veterans of local first responders, Mayfield Police Officer J.D. Shultz, Graves County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Riley, and Mayfield Fire Department’s Chris Sexton were also recognized as giving back to the community.
