Those looking for a renovated space for a wedding, bridal or baby shower or a business meeting have a new Graves County option.
The Hickory Place Event Center, 71 Commerce St. in Hickory, held its ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house earlier this month.
The 3,650-square-foot space holds up to 200 people. It is located in the former Meadow View Market grocery, which closed last fall.
"I had had the idea for about a year," co-owner Jennifer Beasley said of having an event center in Graves County. "I just kind of had it in my heart."
She is hoping the event center grows into a full-time job for her. With a location just off U.S. 45 between Lone Oak and Mayfield, Beasley said the building is in a perfect location to attract customers from Graves and McCracken counties.
Beasley and her brother, Davin Burnett, bought the building in December, and Beasley and her husband, Jason, a farmer, have done much of the renovation work themselves.
The space now has textured plaster walls and porcelain tile floors that resemble wide planking. The space features high ceilings and exposed beams from which hang clear garden lights. A giant stone fireplace takes up most of one end.
"I feel like my place is homey feeling," Beasley said.
On a tour through the large commercial kitchen, Beasley points to a few boxes and some wooden chairs in a dark stain lined up beside them.
"We ordered the chairs from Georgia," she said. "I haven't even completely unboxed them yet because we haven't needed them."
Beasley has added dressing rooms and has plans for a space with a backdrop for photography. By the end of the summer, she also plans an outdoor gathering space appropriate for weddings and other celebrations.
Although it is Beasley's first venture into managing an event space, she has informally planned parties for families and friends for years, she said. Also, besides the space, Beasley also offers catering services.
Since bookings began in mid-March, The Hickory Place has hosted two business meetings, two showers and a wedding reception, along with Beasley's parents' 50th wedding anniversary party. One wedding is already booked for October.
