The Graves County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents to a scam in the area.
Detective Sgt. Richard Edwards said scammers were reported Tuesday calling local residents claiming to represent the Graves County Sheriff's Office. Caller ID identified the call-back number as (Mayfield) 270-356-8170.
"When you call the number, it goes to a computer prompt with a list of numbers that would direct you to special units in the department," Edwards said in a news release.
For example, Edwards said the unknown caller would ask the person to come to the sheriff's office for fingerprints in reference to being on the sex offender registry.
"At this time, there has been no incident where personal identification or money has been given to the scammer," he said.
Edwards said the Graves County Sheriff's Office does not call residents asking for personal information and the number reported does not belong to the sheriff's office.
"Be aware of scammers and please do not give personal information over the phone," Edwards said.
An investigation of the complaints is continuing. Anyone similarly contacted is asked to call the sheriff's office at 270-247-4501.
