Following a historic track season a year ago, the Graves County Eagles will look to add to their recent accomplishments when they begin their season March 10, at the McCracken County Quad-Meet.

Junior Sophie Gallloway will be the main focus for track and field in the First Region this spring as she looks to defend her triple crown win in 2019.

Galloway walked away with first place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump, setting the state record twice in back to back attempts at the KHSAA Class 3A state championship track and field meet at the University of Kentucky.

In addition to Galloway's impressive feats, Kyler Madding and Emma Hancock had solid showings with top-20 finishes at the state championship event.

With more talent on the way and only a few athletes gone due to graduation, the Eagles will be poised to make a lot of noise in the First Region this spring.

Mayfield 'new and improved' in 2020

Much like the Mayfield tennis program, MHS track has more than just the upcoming season to be giddy about this spring.

Upgrades to the track and field equipment and facility will allow the Cardinals to host meets at MHS for the first time in over 20 years.

The Cardinals will host the "Fast Times at Mayfield High" eight team invitational on May 2nd with an additional middle school meet set to take place sometime this spring as well.

When asked about the Cardinals' new opportunities this season, Mayfield first year head coach Mike Rogers said there's nothing but excitement surrounding this season.

"There is no doubt there's excitement about our new facility and the upgrades that our board of education and administrative team invested in our student athletes," Rogers said. "Getting a new rubberized track and all the new equipment is a great commitment by our leadership and one that we, as a team, hope shows up quickly in the record books."

Where there is excitement for the new track, there have still been hurdles to jump when it comes to preparing for the upcoming season while the track is being finished and temperatures remain below 50 degrees.

Rogers said he and his team have worked to get started on preparations as others finish their winter sports and the weather starts to cooperate.

"We have worked hard to establish a base that the kids can carry throughout the season and worked on form and technique that all preseasons require. It has been a challenge because we can't get on our new track until the last application of sealant is applied. We also have had another round of cold weather here late in February."

Despite graduating two-time shot put state champion Barrett Henley and state qualifiers like Carson and Connor Guthrie, the Cardinals will return multiple talented athletes who have deep experience at both regional and state levels.

Pole vaulter Briley Mohon and multi-athlete Alonzo Daniel will lead a boys team that will also feature talented athletes from the MHS football team like James Topp, Isaac Stevenson, Daniel Coles, Lucas Henley, Diaz Perry and Tony Parrott.

On the girls side of things, Mayfield returns Kate Henderson for her sophomore season as well as eighth grader Lily Cates and 2019 state qualifier Ella Smith.
