Mayfield graduate Barrett Henley, shown in an earlier shot put competition, repeated as the state Class A champion Thursday at the KHSAA meet in Lexington. Henley, who had won the event his junior year, also finished third in the state discus event.

LEXINGTON -- Barrett Henley went out as a repeat champ.

The recent Mayfield graduate threw a 52-foot, 2.5-inch shot put for first place in Thursday's KHSAA Class A State Championship meet at the University of Kentucky to earn his second straight state title in the event.

Henley, who will play football at Murray State University, won last year's title with a 51-06.25 throw. His best this season set a new school record at 53-4 at Marshall County earlier this month.

He also finished with third in the discus with a 136-03 throw. Henley finished runner-up at state last year in discus. He also set a new school record in that event with a 164-10 in April.

Briley Mohon also tied for third in pole vault with a 12-foot height, while Alonzo Daniel ran fifth in the 110 meter hurdles in 16.24 seconds.

Freshman Ella Smith finished in fifth place in the girls' triple jump. Smith, who also finished in the top 10 in the long jump, posted a 33-06.75 leap that edged senior teammate Jaden Whitehead's sixth-place finish by half an inch.
