Mayfield's Colin Price gathers himself after applying a quick tag on a sliding Beau Smith to complete a double play Wednesday in the Third District ballgame at Ballard Memorial.

La CENTER – It was part comeback and part payback. It was also all win for Mayfield.

Just over a week since Ballard Memorial had rallied in the final three innings to edge the Cardinals, 6-5, Mayfield managed a six-run rally between the sixth and seventh innings Wednesday for an 11-9 win over the Bombers.

The two teams will meet again in the first round of the Third District tournament at Mayfield in less than two weeks. Both wrapped up the regular season district slate with 1-3 records.

The Redbirds again had the advantage on the Bombers, leading 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. Mayfield scored off RBI singles from Ethan Couch (first inning) and Colby Kennemore (fourth), an RBI double from Connor Guthrie (fourth) and a pair of RBI doubles from Charlie Sims (second, fifth).

Ballard Memorial (6-18) then scored eight runs with two doubles for three of those runs. The Cardinals replied with five runs in the top of the sixth, getting a two-RBI double from Colin Price and two more runs off a Sims single, 10-9. Couch would later double the final run in the seventh inning.

All told, Mayfield racked up 16 hits. Guthrie went 4-for-5 with two doubles, and Sims, Price and Couch were all 3-for-4 at the plate. Derek Stewart was 2-for-3 with a double, as well.

Reed Swindler was the starting pitcher and went 4 1/3 innings for five earned runs. Stewart relieved in the fifth and went a third for four more runs. Dominic Thomas came in for 1 2/3 no-hit innings to earn the win. Price closed in the final two outs for the save.

Next Up – Mayfield (9-18) will play in the Preston Cope Classic Saturday in a 3 p.m. match with Carlisle County at Marshall County. The Cards lost to the Comets, 9-2, Tuesday.
