Mayfield American Legion Post 26 competed in its final regular season tournament over the weekend, going 1-2 in the King City Classic in Tupelo, Mississippi.
In game one, Post 26 watched their chances slip away late as host team Tupelo (MS) Post 49 scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to finish off Mayfield 10-1 in five innings.
Walks continued to be a problem for Post 26 as the pitching staff combined for seven free passes.
Catcher Kade Gibson picked up the lone RBI for Mayfield, knocking in a run with two outs in the top of the first on a line drive single to right field.
On Saturday, Post 26 got off to a better start and kept their bats hot as they outscored Tuscaloosa (AL) Post 34, 11-7, in six innings.
Leadoff man Taylor Goodwin delivered another strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI’s.
Coleson Naranjo also swung a hot bat against Tuscaloosa, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs including a two-run single in the top of the first.
Matthew Ray earned the win on the bump for Mayfield, tossing five innings of nine hit, seven run ball, striking out four batters and walking seven.
Mayfield rounded out the weekend with a Saturday night matchup with the Baldwyn Blue Aces.
Just as Post 26 appeared to be cooling off, Baldwyn was heating up.
The Blue Aces rattled off 10 runs in six innings to take down Post 26, 10-4.
Naranjo fueled the offense once again in Mayfield’s loss to Baldwyn, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.
Gibson also contributed heavily at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of singles.
